Esports Star Faker Faces Online Death Threats: Police Involved
Following a significant victory in the League of Legends LCK 2023 Summer Playoffs, the renowned player, Lee “Faker,” finds himself facing a troubling situation. The triumph should have been a moment for joy, but it has brought along a worrisome cloud of threats and safety concerns for the player.
After T1’s impressive win against KT Rolster, a disturbing message emerged online, targeting Faker. The message, chilling in its tone, threatened to harm Faker while he’s staying at the T1 hostel. Understandably, this has caused distress within the esports community.
In response to this threat, the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency sprang into action, initiating an investigation shortly after being alerted about the threat on August 10th at around 10:00 pm KST. The case, primarily centered in Seoul, was later transferred to the Daejeon Police Agency, with the primary goal of tracking the internet address (IP) to identify and apprehend the individual responsible for the threat.
T1, the League of Legends organization, didn’t remain passive in the face of these events. They acknowledged the online threats against Faker and made it clear that they’re taking the situation seriously. In their statement, T1 confirmed that they reported the matter to the police and are actively working to ensure the safety of their players.
Recognizing the seriousness of the situation, the LCK (League of Legends Champions Korea) has decided to implement heightened security measures for the upcoming Playoffs and Finals. Fans attending matches at LoL Park can now expect thorough security checks, including detailed bag searches, an increased number of security personnel both inside and outside the arena, and improved emergency response equipment. Both T1 and law enforcement agencies are committed to the safety and security of all players.
